Ark Idea
um… i’m not sure i explained the idea i’d had for the Ark that well at Aardvark this eve… oh well!
i think some similar ideas for the space have been floating around anyway but i thought i’d post the email then you can understand what i actually meant (plus i added pictures! well a picture). have a read and see what you think i guess?!
“I was thinking about the building stuff the other day (specifically the ark) and had a bit of an idea. It’s probably got lots wrong with it but I said I’d email if I had any ideas so this is what I’m doing. take it or leave it I guess.
THE IDEA
To turn the ark into a creative space where the community and church cross and relationships are built and creative stuff is made. To make the Ark into a dynamic, buzzy and interesting place that reflects something of the who God is to the community (local and wider).
UPSTAIRS
keep the music studio and turn the bit where we have aardvark into a shared studio for designers and artists.
(something like this?)
DOWNSTAIRS
turn the space into an adaptable space for the church and community.
café & gallery in the day / early evening and other stuff later in the evening (like Aardvark, Chinese church, tae kwon do, gig / live music venue, workshops etc)
(I saw a video of a band’s studio that was similar to the ark where they’d set up a timelapse camera and filmed the space morph from a lounge type place to a studio to a gig venue and I thought ‘that’d be cool to do’)
(not exactly like this but you get the idea!)
STRENGTHS / OPPOTUNITIES
of having creative people (musicians, artists, designers, photographers, etc) using in the same space as each other.
- varied disciplines working together produce interesting / unique work
- shared space and resources keeps costs low
of having creative studios and community centre together (upstairs and downstairs)
- the creativity feeds into the life of the church/community
- through work produced… ie gallery & general church/community life?!
- through workshops / lessons run for community
- forces people within the church to be outward looking
- witness
- through personal relationships
- through creatives work. If some / majority of their work was focused that way (whether explicitly or not) i.e. film making rob bell style, music delirious style or websites re:jesus style?!
of the location
- central Bristol location near a small row of shops so people already pass/ meet there already.
- near Bristol Uni and several UWE Halls (students from Art, Media & Design mainly live in the centre)
WEAKNESSES / THREATS
of the general idea
- if people didn’t get on board (esp the creatives – if didn’t want to work in a shared space or just wanted a normal job?)
- if people didn’t pick up the over arching vision of the place
- if it had too many small visions that didn’t meet (everyone wanted something different from it that conflicted)
- that people don’t need another coffee shop / cafe (ie Jesus didn’t say go forth and make coffee shops in all nations!) so it just distracts people from whats actually important.
- it’s badly run / set up (amaturish)
of the building
- the down stairs is too big?
- it costs too much to set up and run (the building and then people need some form of income too!)
- its hard to make that downstairs space easily adaptable
I guess the main risk is that the building dictates what happens in side it and what happens inside of it doesn’t really meet any particular need. It just drains time/ money and effort that could be better used elsewhere?!
anyway they where my thoughts.”
Also Ros if you wanted to add your thoughts feel free to leave a comment…?
POST SCRIPT Generally i think it’s funny sharing ideas like this because you just think that it’s probably just random idea that’s probably too big to do and just a bit stupid… but then you start to think that most things were once daft ideas that probably seemed a bit silly once aswell. i guess that doesn’t mean that all daft ideas are actually good ideas but perhaps some of them are?!
Hi, as I have been invited to make a comment, I guess I will! So, when I read Si’s email a couple of weeks ago I got excited about the possibilities that Si saw in the building, making the ark a place central to the community, where God could meet people through different forms of art and where people could meet each other in a chilled out way. I also really liked the idea of a multi purpose use for the building. At the moment I don’t think the Ark is used as much as it could be.
As a church we are also about to have 8 or 9 days of 24/7 prayer. And so I decided to read the book that charts the story of the modern 24/7 prayer movement called Red Moon Rising. It tells the story of a bunch of people who decided to pray 24 hours a day for a month and then they kept going. The idea of a dedicated prayer room filled with creative resources to aid prayer and communication with God spread across the world like wildfire and God was doing some amazing things. Non Christians were choosing to hang out in prayer rooms, people were becoming Christians, people were getting healed.
Towards the end of the book they tell the story of ‘boiler rooms’ buildings dedicated to housing 24/7 prayer and working in the local community and they were described as having the following 6 characteristics:
- prayer
- creativity
- mission
- justice
- pilgrimage
- community
and I thought wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Ark could display those same characteristics. Not in the same way as they are expressed in a boiler room perhaps, but displayed nonetheless. A community of creative people attached to the Ark, rooted in prayer and concern for the world, both spiritually and materially, attracting people because of the hospitality and peace they would find.
Aardvark already has such a rich heritage of prayer, worship, justice. Community is developing all the time. Our hearts are stirred for those students and others across the city who do not know God, so why not develop these further…
Hi …novice blogger here …as regards ideas for Ark, ArkArt,
Ark-eatery, Arkaccounts, Arkafe, ArkActivity,Arkommunity… brilliant…let’s do it..!
That sound sooo rash, impulsive etc but hey..!
Let’s pray, talk, throw wild ideas around over coffee etc and maybe some sensible strategic and practical thoughts too and see what the Holy Spirit ignites in us.
PS Any other ideas for words beginning with ‘ark..’ ?
Arktic? As someone who’s spent a few wednesday afternoon’s in the Ark I think heating is a priority!….geez that makes me sound dull!
Arkangel, arkitect, Arkansas
I’m loving it Simon. I’d be up for a bit of hand-dirtying to get this up and running! I think releasing some creativity is good all round. Not only does it get you out of the house…but doing something you enjoy and becoming good at it relieves the stress, and I’ve found that it can just make you happier. So having a center for artistry is an amazing idea. I also find general socialising amazing. (I’m sorry if this is all really obvious stuff)
Also, i think that working on something that takes time can really bring you closer to the real essence of God as it takes you away from the world and brings you closer to the perfect being God made you to be. (maybe getting a bit deep now) But you can really find yourself. I find that anyway.
So…just to make sure i’ve got your idea…it’s a place where people can come to be creative (upstairs) where there will be a few people teaching different forms of art to people who are interested? ie local community/students/church. and a cafe downstairs/general purpose hall? right?
yer something like that… teaching could well be a part of it but people could also use the space to do work in a ‘professional’ way too so perhaps producing stuff commercially (in what ever form that takes… so like for the (wider?) church or charities or for piles of cash to help fund other stuff?!) so anyway it’d be a real live and kicking studio with a mix of disciplines working together…
downstairs would be a place of crossover… like a few guys i spoke to who had been to the aardvark meal said they really enjoyed it and didn’t feel intimidated by being in ‘a church’ or whatever… they just got to chat to people hear a bit about what we where about. a couple of guys told me to tell them if we ever do it again! (which is cool) i dunno about other people but i find that i have nonchristian friends and christian friends but they’re completely seperate groups and even if friends are interested in God it’s hard to bring them into the ‘christian world’
i don’t think any of the ideas i proposed where particularly rigid or even that original (people have suggested similar ideas in the past) but i think it was more just to throw them out there and see what people thought at the current time and see if there was anything they could add to the vision or if they caught it, etc… neil was telling me that we’re in a bit of a unique oppotunity where we actually have the resources to do something like that at the moment so i guess it’s worth having a think and a pray about anyway.
i really like the ideas ros had about bringing some other aspects like prayer, pilgrimage and justice into the mix… eg… pilgrimage: you could hold some evening talks or conferences there at times (like nick park, creator of wallace and gromit, who is a christian and lives in bristol). you also could have a prayer room and stuff… it could be great to find ways of bringing the justice issues the church is already involved in into the mix. (ie Zambia Aids Orphanage, Christian Aid, One25, etc)
i guess one other thing i was thinking about was that it should be done properly… what i mean by that is i sometimes get annoyed that when the church does stuff it seems quite amature, and while i don’t think the church should be all slick and comporate i think that if you’re doing something for God it should be your very best to the very highest standard you can manage. anyway i guess that’s the case generally not just for this particular idea…
(also sorry the one picture i posted in the original thing doesn’t seem to have worked… and it makes me sad! anyway it was of a cool looking graphic design studio so you’ll just have to imagine it)
I think this is a really exciting vision. I don’t really have anything to add at the moment in terms of fresh ideas, but lets keep dreaming and praying.
I really want to see people from different disciplines working together. even getting people from the same disciplines can be difficult and i think its essential to get rid of the tribal, territorial, fearful nature that seems to define the arts (and, to be honest, humans) in life.
I wonder could it reach further than the ‘arts’. This could be a seperate issue but i fear that the church puts alot of time into the arts and perhaps leaves out the scientific, mathematical, logical thinkers or the practical, sporty people. That might not make sense and it might be too long sighted for the moment but wouldn’t it be nice to try and integrate some of those circles. Just thinking out loud really
why the hell did i name myself mrsnappy. its really starting to get on my nerves
as a scientific / pratical person id like to chuck one out there… I don’t know if this fits in with the vision but ill offer the equipment for a full black and white / color photographic darkroom. Its sat in my garage waiting for a space to use it in – converting the bathroom at home is hard work just for a few hours use. I have been meaning to offer it ever since I heard your idea.
Let’s all sit down in there and label some diagrams! Well ok maybe not but if you can think of a way then getting the scientists and people involved will be great. Otherwise I think it’s a great idea anyway, it sounds really exciting. How practical is it in terms of what resources the church has available coz if we can do it then let’s do it! You’ve got a lot of people just breaking up for a long university holiday……
oh. drat. it just ate my post. grr. anyhow. it went something along the lines of ill happily get some scientists involved in photography if that bit happens. and that im definitly up for some diagrams – can we get the plans from any recent planning applications. and one spanner in the works might be that i think the ark is grade 2 listed. this means we might need planning permission to do pretty much anything. money, time etc etc etc. leaflet here:

It would be a great project, agreed? I think it needs to be taken to the next level. To the leadership team, or maybe some proper plans laid out first. Maybe business plan style (because i totally agree that if this is going to be done it should be done professionally or as well as we can get)
Sorry if i’m sounding pushy…but its too good an idea to be just talked about…
yer… me and neil are going to have meet in the week to have a bit of a chat about it, about what to do next, etc. at the moment i think we’re just interested to see if people catch a vision for it (because that’s probably the most important thing). i think some/most of the leadership team have already been informed of the ideas (but i don’t know what they think to be honest)
i think in my mind it’d be a big project that a number of people would need to commit to and probably not something that could or should just be set up over the summer… (although there’s no reason why we as a community can’t start to move in some of the directions suggested already – by working together and stuff). i think it’d be great if it was something that was really thought through and then launched properly. but i definatly agree it’d be a big shame if it just stayed as a nice idea and wasn’t progressed further…
One idea that you may be interested in is something we’re up to here in Essex. We have an event on the last Saturday Evening of every month called Fiat Latte where we serve coffees (hence the Latte) and have a live band perform. We already had Transition perform at the opening night.
Already we’re having young people from outside the church come and with the Ark’s position you’d probably get even more customers then we do. Funnily enough talking about community our church moto is now Transforming Community, I’d call that a coincidence if I believed in them. By the way the Fiat means ‘let there be’ in Italian it has nothing to do with the car company lol.
